Air India bets big on cargo; to grow capacity 300% in 5 years
Air India is placing a significant emphasis on expanding its cargo space. The airline’s substantial order for 70 wide body aircraft will boost its annual cargo capacity by 300% to 2 million tonnes over the next five years, enabling non-stop connections to key global export markets. This increase in capacity aligns with India’s rising participation in international trade.
Campbell Wilson, Air India’s Managing Director and CEO, stated that the airline recognizes the enormous potential in the air cargo industry, which the Indian government plans to expand to 10 million tonnes by 2030. To foster growth and enhance market presence, AI’s cargo division will implement a range of strategic measures. In addition to the significant rise in passenger belly capacity, AI will introduce value-added products and services across its entire network.
To ensure the success of this strategy, AI has planned several initiatives. These include adopting IT solutions, investing in infrastructure, creating an integrated network, and expanding its reach.
